Tagged | Five Things You Didn't Know

Malcolm just tagged me, and even though I'm not blogging I guess I ought to play the game ;-)
So here's five things you probably didn't know about me:

1. I'm a third generation Maths teacher. My dad and granddad. It's like the family business.

2. I used to be in a band called Caned and Able; we recorded with Massive Attack, supported some bands you may have heard of and were played by Gilles Peterson on the radio.

3. My great-grandfather was a famous Edinburgh preacher, 'the golden voice of Scotland'. There was a 2 minute silence in the city when he died.

4. I was interviewed on Trevor MacDonald's programme about my experiences teaching in Inner City schools, and admitted to once having been kicked in the balls.

5. I once skimmed a stone on Lake Windermere and knocked over a duck. I was devastated, waded in and righted it. It rolled over again.

So I now tag Nic, Gareth Higgins, Saga, Pete and Si

Advent Calendar

Ryan got me thinking about numbers this morning, and the countdown that is Advent.

Advent Calendar

Cardboard windows and gold numbers;
A candle burning down digits while cash flows
Like chocolate and pies and rivers and drink.

I’ve been counting the cost of Christmas,
working out what’s been taken away;
occupied Palestine and tinsel banned,
Fatwas, obese Santas, drunk bishops;
it seems divisions have been multiplied.

Guns blaze; 3, 4, 5 prostitutes lie dead.
Fractions of God and sex and virgins,
Tough equations requiring complex solutions.

It is Advent.
Wait until I count to 25,
And I’m left with only this remainder:
One + Infinity giving birth to one become naught,
To raise us to the power of love.

Wait

Caesarean Sections

The bitter old man stands at the gates of the earth
Waiting Watching
Guarding the only entrance and exit to this citadel planet.
The babies file in and the dead file out
And he watches them
Grimly keeping count.

He watches He waits
He shivers to shake
The tired cold from his limbs
For he must stay awake
For the one they say will attempt a salvation.

He keeps one eye on the horizon
On the distant reaches of the future
Where-from surely his nemesis will ride with armies
And demand entry:
The battle of the gates of the earth

So heighten awareness and tighten security and all the while…
He does not notice the infant God
Slipping in among the embryonic ranks
Of those awaiting entry.

Become powerless
To slip the trap of the powerful.
A Trojan baby
Now inside the citadel planet.
Waiting, hiding, growing
Evolving an inner salvation
(The original subversion)

The wait is nearly over.
Blog begins in 21 days.
